It is a wine grape variety that originated in Greece and is now mainly found in Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc. White grapes are the most common, but there are also black grapes that are classified as Malvasia.

    What is Malvasia?

This grape, which is said to have originated in Greece, has mutated little by little in various parts of Italy, and the white grape is called Malvasia Bianca + the name of the land, and the black grape is called Malvasianera + the name of the land. It has spread not only to Italy but also to Spain and Portugal.

Here we will introduce the white grape variety Malvasia Biancalunga and the black grape variety Malvasianera, which are grown in the Tuscany region and which we handle.

Additionally, Malvasia de Siges, which was introduced into the Catalonia region of Spain and was on the verge of extinction, has the same origin as Malvasia Bianca Lunga, but has undergone unique changes and is therefore a different variety, which we will introduce in a separate section at the end.

What are the characteristics of Malvasia?

    Malvasia Bianca Lunga

The clusters are large and long, shaped like inverted pyramids, while the berries are small to medium in size, round and juicy. It is a vigorous, mid to late-ripening variety.

    Malvasia Nera

The clusters are elongated and pyramidal, with not very dense fruit. The berries are medium-sized, oval in shape, and have a thick skin. It is a late-ripening variety, so the harvest is late.

What are the characteristics of Malvasia's aroma and taste?

    Malvasia Bianca Lunga

It is characterized by its high sugar content, which produces wines with strong aromas like musk and apricot. Taking advantage of the high sugar content, it can be used to produce sweet wines, and also produces strong dry white wines.

    Malvasia Nera

The wines are characterized by their deep color, which is extracted from the thick skins, and have a strong structure. They also have a rich aroma, and although they may have a strong animalistic flavor, they have a high-quality finish.

    Basic pairings of Malvasia

    Malvasia Bianca Lunga

Because it is a powerful and aromatic white wine, it goes well with mustard-stewed chicken and roast pork. For appetizers, it is better to have a hearty dish such as pate or quiche rather than a light salad.

    Malvasia Nera

It can be used alone, or in Tuscany, it can be blended with Sangiovese or Canaiolo. It has a firm structure but also has elegance, so it is recommended for meat dishes such as roast beef and grilled steak, as well as slightly aged hard cheeses.

    What is Malvasia de Siges?

This grape was grown in a very small amount in a small town called Sigges in the Catalonia region of Spain, about 30km south of Barcelona. The Bartra family, with whom we have a relationship, succeeded in increasing cultivation, and even today, only a few producers continue to grow this variety.

Like the aforementioned Malvasia Bianca Lunga, it originated in Greece and was brought to the Mediterranean coastal region.

The grapes are very high in sugar, long and thin with ample space between each fruit, making them an unusual shape for those who are used to seeing wine grapes. The grapes' sugar content, volume, and aroma are unusual for a white wine, making it an unforgettable taste once you've tried it.

This wine is in no way inferior to main meat dishes and provides a full-bodiedness and lingering aftertaste that is hard to find anywhere else.
