Vermentino, also known as Rolle in France and mainly grown in Italy, is a variety that loves the Mediterranean coastal regions and does not grow well without plenty of sun.

    What is Vermentino?

It is one of the varieties whose origin is still unknown, and there are two theories about its origin: one is that it originated in Greece and the other in Madeira. It is cultivated mainly in Corsica, Sardinia, Liguria, Tuscany and other parts of Italy, as well as in the Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon regions of France.

Other European countries also grow this variety for raisins.

What are the characteristics of Vermentino?

It likes full sun, hot, dry, poor soil, and the fact that it matures late also makes warmth important.

The tree is strong, but is weak to wind. It is vulnerable to powdery mildew, so care must be taken. The yield is always stable.

The clusters are medium to large, the fruit is medium in size, and the skin is light green, turning reddish when overripe.

What are the characteristics of Vermentino's aroma and flavor?

Vermentino alone produces a light yet full-bodied taste, with aromas of apple, almond, hawthorn, pear and pineapple.

Vermentino itself is somewhat lacking in acidity, so it is often blended with Ugni Blanc, Cinsault, Grenache Blanc, etc. to add freshness. On the other hand, Vermentino helps create the unique characteristics and personality of the wine by blending it with the characteristic aroma and flavor of the other varieties.

    Basic pairings with Vermentino

Seafood, raw or grilled, is a great accompaniment. Vermentino alone is best served with olive oil. Grilled or sautéed chicken is also a great match. It pairs perfectly with dishes that incorporate Mediterranean elements (olive oil, tomatoes, herbs, garlic, etc.).
