Information on the origins of the Meyer family

    Alsace, France

The Alsace region is located in northeastern France, near the border with Germany.

Located in the north of France, many of the grape varieties grown there are similar to those grown in Germany (such as Riesling), and over 90% of the wine produced is white. Among these , Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Muscat, and Pinot Gris are known as "noble varieties" and are extremely popular.

Another characteristic of Alsace is that all wines, except for sparkling wine, are served in long, thin flute bottles .

Domaine and vineyards of the Meyer family

The Meyer family's domaine is located in the village of Bergholtz, in the southern part of Alsace, about 20km south of the popular tourist town of Colmar.

The village of Bergholz is one of only 51 plots eligible to produce AOC Alsace Grand Cru.

The farm once belonged to the Abbey of Mülbach and was purchased by the Meyer family after the French Revolution.

    Organic Initiatives

Organic history : Since 1969 (certified by Demeter in April 1980 and ECOCERT in 1991)

After the war, Mayer tried chemical farming, but after a serious experience of pesticide poisoning that left him with paralysis of his optic nerves, He converted to organic farming in 1969 and decided to cultivate his fields using biodynamic farming , which was considered unorthodox among organic farming methods at the time.

Biodynamic farming is a farming method based on the natural living philosophy advocated by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian thinker known for his Waldorf education.

According to Meyer, the homeopathic soil preparation method, based on the principle of respect for life and the earth, activates the soil and restores the natural balance that had been disturbed, thus increasing the resistance of the vines, protecting them from diseases and enriching the soil.

Mr. Meyer is also certified by the international certification organization Demeter, and is one of the original members who obtained certification at the same time as Demeter was founded in France in April 1980. Since 1991, he has been inspected and certified by ECOCERT in accordance with the EU organic standards. Official certification is required to call something organic, and there are severe penalties for fraud.

However, in recent years, there are many producers who claim to be producing organic or natural wines without any certification, and who use the slogan "We are using biodynamic farming." When I asked Mr. Meyer what he thought about this, he told me angrily that biodynamic certification is not based on law, there are no penalties for false advertising, and there are many people who only think about money.

    Black grapes : Pinot Noir

    Winemaking by the Meyer family

    Field soil

Mr. Meyer's fields are located on a hillside along the Rhine, facing southeast, and have soil that is well-drained and receives good sunlight.

They use biodynamic farming methods to improve the soil, and the fertiliser is homemade, made from a mixture of animal nettles, chamomile and other plants.

There are about five ridges between his field and the neighbor's conventional farming field, where no grapes are planted for harvest and weeds are intentionally allowed to grow. This prevents pesticides from the neighboring field from entering his field.

    Characteristics of cultivation methods etc.

They practice biodynamic farming and use a calendar based on the movement of the heavens and preparations made from natural ingredients such as cow horns, quartz, and nettles.

    Characteristics of brewing method

We vinify each variety and each field in small tanks. Each tank has its own temperature control, and by keeping the temperature below 20°C, we produce wines with a refined taste and no unpleasant flavors.
